The Redbird Ranger District encompasses 145,850 acres of steep rugged hills, reclaimed coal mines, rivers and creeks in Clay, Leslie, Owsley, Perry, Harlan and Knox counties. Highlights include the near 100 mile Redbird Crest Trail, elk viewing in Redbird Wildlife Management Area, Cawood Recreation Area, and Big Creek Picnic Area.
The historic Redbird District office was built in 1924 with beautiful hand milled walnut, chestnut oak and maple woodwork. The stone foundation was hand quarried from nearby yards. The building was once the headquarters of Fordson Coal Company, a subsidiary of Ford Motor Company.
