  • 22. Rock Bridge Arch

Rock Bridge is the only true natural "bridge" in the Red River Gorge, because it crosses over water. This unique arch was formed from a waterfall that eroded through a joint fracture in a weak sandstone layer. This new pathway for the stream rerouted the water so that it went into the fracture instead of over the waterfall. Erosion continued until only the hard sandstone of the waterfall arch remained.
